Pomegranates   1 comment

Posted at 3:11 am in Uncategorized

Posting is going to be light to non-existent going through the Thanksgiving weekend.

Here's a little helpful food hint I picked up a couple of years ago.

Pomegranates are great, but possibly the messiest fruit I've ever dealt with. The juice spurts everywhere and stains, plus it's a pain to get the arils out from the white stuff.

It helps a good bit to fill a big pot of cold water and break open the pomegranate pieces under water. You can then thumb the arils out from the wite stuff, and, the arils will (largely) sink while the white stuff will float and can be skimmed off.

Of course I still have juice stains all over my shirt..

  1. Somebody asked me today what I'm thankful for and I had to think really hard about it, let's see: lost my mother last year about this time after being her sole care provider for three long years of watching my last parent (and close relative save my garden center uncle) die a slow miserable death. So now I'm unemployed living on the vapors of my savings and didn't get a single tilling or yard job this last summer, which is work anyone can usually get. Don't even have a girlfriend to help ease the pain, both existential and physical. All of my old friends have moved on. On top of this pathos, I'm starting to really show my age with lots of grey hair that wasn't there 4 years ago plus the physical decline that goes with stress and aging.

Not very much to be thankful for this year and then I remembered you and your blog. I'm thankful that you actually go to the trouble of documenting the ebb and flow of restaurants and stores in this town and then allow us to come on your blog and go on and on about it all. Thanks Ted.
