  1. Little Caesar's on Garner's ferry doesn't surprise me at all.

Doc's BBQ on Shop road does.

The fact that Jackson's buffet got an A surprises me. btw, they're planning on going back to cafeteria style on July 1. A plan that worked *so* well for the previous restaurants.......

Business is still good there but has fallen off.....

  2. Hmmm - there seems like there is a glut of Oriental restaurants on this list. Some of the 'hole in the wall' and buffet type restaurants make me kind of wary but the food is always so dang good.

For Miyo's and Rioz to be on this list really surprised me. Waffle House, no shock there.

And there is even a Church's Chicken for Rick!!!!!

    Homer

    29 Jun 14 at 12:55 am

  3. @Homer - When I saw churches on the list I thought, Ah ha, no surprise. The second thing I noticed, the same as you, the Oriental restaurants.
And Little Caesars? Dang, I go in there once every couple of weeks.

  4. I've noticed that one or another flavor of Miyo's will show up on the WLTX Restaurant Report Card more frequently than they should--i.e. never. They usually clean up their act (literally) and get an "A" on their followup inspections. However eventually they lapse back into bad practices.

  5. Having lived on the east side of Columbia for most of my life. Garners Ferry Road, Leesburg Road. I am still in awe at the number of restaurants on my side of town that fall into a less than 'A' rating from DHEC.
I have eaten at these Restaurants in the recent past. I always thought I was pretty good at noticing a Restaurants rating, as I mentioned in a recent post related to a small country store that Ted posted just a week or so ago, I said, even though they are closed I see they had an 'A' rating from DHEC.
Some of you may remember I spelled DHEC wrong (DEHEC).

My Mother In Law is coming over today and the wife wants to take her out to eat. I think we'll start out at Pho Viet on Devine St. (B Rating) then I'll take her to Palmetto Pig for the second course (B Rating) and if that doesn't take care of it, for the third course, we'll go to Bang Cock Restaurant #1 on Garners Ferry Road (C Rating) that ought'a do it.

  6. I'll just order the roll's and even then I'll drink some of the pink stuff before we go.
It's funny though, a restaurant can get a lower rating if their mop station does not have the correct temperature coming out of the faucet, or they may not have the correct cover attached to their over head lights to prevent glass from falling if a bulb burst, maybe they have not have the restaurant sprayed for bugs in a timely manner. Maybe the temperature of one of their coolers is a little above spec.
It does not necessarily mean they are making nasty food.
But, with that said, if a restaurant has neglected to pay attention to those items there may be something else they are neglecting that would be detrimental if a customer were to consume their food. BLAHHH!!! Get a 24 pack of toilet tissue before you go eat. There is not much worse than having food poisoning.
I got sick off of some oysters one time. It was coming out of both ends, if you know what I mean.

  7. I sell to restaurants throughout the midlands and can testify to the condition of many of the kitchens. The ones to look out for are the ones like Mike pointed out that seem to regularly fail their routine inspection then pass the follow up. That generally shows an institutional disregard for basic food safety. The owner(s) either don't know or don't care if they are following correct health procedures and don't worry about it until they are caught.

If they are doing the little things right they should get at least a 90. Any place scoring below that should be avoided.

    29 Jun 14 at 11:32 am

  8. My impression is that the public would rarely see these ratings on a sticker -- a place would quickly take action and ask for re-inspection.

    ted

    29 Jun 14 at 11:32 am

  9. @Ted - Good point, If restaurants were required to place the rating sticker at eye level on an 8 by 10 sheet, right on the front door, a big ole 'C' might have an affect. The rather small sticker that restaurants display now, in any number of areas that may not be noticeable to the customer, is not working. I say this because I do remember really noticing the sticker at most restaurants I go to.

@Also - In my opinion, posting the ratings of popular restaurants is one of your finer moments. Great job.
Are there any with an even lower rating?
Is it possible to get a lower rating and stay open?
Which ones have an 'A' rating that might be a surprise?

    Rick

  10. Ted, I'm glad you posted this. I saw this story a few days ago and I was going to post the link, and I saw you were way ahead of me...LOL. As I've mentioned before, I'm a bit of a germaphobe, and the restaurant report card thing has put me off to quite a few places. I wish the DHEC website would list the major reasons for the low scores the way they do on WLTX. I used to really like UNO but they've gotten low scores repeatedly so I haven't been back. In case anyone isn't aware, the routine inspections aren't scheduled, but the follow-ups are, so it's easy for a place with a C to clean up for a day or two to get a better rating. That D&D restaurant that's listed in West Columbia has been around a long time. My grandparents used to eat there quite a bit, and I would refuse to go because that place was gross even back then! I'd rather eat in a gas station bathroom.

    TahoeChic

    29 Jun 14 at 2:38 pm

  11. @TC - Dang, D&D must be pretty gross. I'm trying to remember if I ever ate in a gas station bathroom. Seems like I had a candy bar one time that I was chewing on.
Hmm... still pretty gross. Don't touch anything.

Well, I really do not remember eating in a restroom other than that, I do remember $hitting my pants in a restaurant one time though. Does that count?

    Rick

    29 Jun 14 at 3:40 pm

  12. @rick - that had to be some VERY bad food if you couldn't even get out of the restaurant before soiling yourself.....lol...

    Homer

    29 Jun 14 at 7:58 pm

  13. @Rick - I think that's now called Sharting. An affliction as one grows older. :)

My un-surprise at Little Caesar's is probably more because their pizza resembles more the card-board stuff you get if you buy a Di-Giorno's next door at the Bi-lo.

I tend to prefer a place that has real pizza ovens like the defunct Bobby's house of Pizza or Blythewood house of pizza, and if I don't want to hoof it, Stromboli's on Bluff road makes a pretty good one.

Being from Pittsburgh, it's sad to say that your better pizzas in this area come from Pizza Hut.

Grades don't bother me much. I once worked at a Chinese restaurant that recycled their rice. (If it was untouched they'd deep fried it to go into their "Singing Rice" dish.) I didn't last long there. The only job I was fired from.

The next restaurant was a wild game food place. Got paid twice the money, did half the work and they told me to slow down......

    MrBO

    29 Jun 14 at 8:03 pm

  14. @Rick - LOL!

D&D and North Main Fish Market were featured on WLTX. D&D had roaches in the restaurant, and the fish market had "food stored in the restroom". I think I gagged just hearing those!

    TahoeChic

    29 Jun 14 at 9:36 pm

  15. I worked at an Applebee's in town, and they had a surprise inspection from DHEC. The restaurant got a C rating, and the C sticker was put on the front door. I watched many people turn away when they saw the C. I can honestly say that the C rating was for nominal things. I watched the kitchen get cleaned thoroughly every night. I even ate there myself. The DHEC inspector came back a couple of days later, and the A was put back on the door. I'm glad that the DHEC inspections are strict, but a bad grade does not always mean that the place is filthy.

    29 Jun 14 at 9:40 pm

  16. OK, I'm gonna rehash another old story and you WILL find it very disgusting and be so thankful that, if you ever ate there, you survived. Here are some of the horror stories from my days at The Whales Tail when I was a mere lad of 15 back in the early 70's.

    1. If you dropped anything out of the deep fryer basket onto the floor, you had to put it back in the fryer for about 30 seconds and then serve it.

    2. All of the shrimp and some of the 'fresh' fish were delivered in the back of pickup trucks, uninspected, under tarps. While it was iced down you had to wonder how good it was after a trip from Charleston or Savannah.

    3. Mops, buckets and cleaning supplies were stored in a little back room with a couple of upright freezers. Steaks and lobster tails were stored in these freezers. I went to get some steaks out one night and someone had shut part of a mop head in the freezer and was frozen to a steak. I had to microwave the steak until I could get the mop strands off and then grill it as normal.

    4. I once cut the tip of my finger so bad that you could actually see the bone. The owner's wife wrapped my finger with tape and gauze and I immediately went about the task of hand mixing cole slaw. Mind you, these were the days before using gloves in a commercial kitchen.

    5. The shrimp were held in an old sink that was stored inside one of the walk in coolers until ready to use. I went in to get some shrimp one time, and for some reason, they were already pink. I don't know if someone spilled something in the sink or if they were going bad but I was told to use them anyway.

    6. Used oil and all garbage were dumped in pits behind the building every night after closing. These pits were not covered until full. In the meantime they attracted every kind of vermin imaginable to come waltzing into the kitchen everytime the back door was opened.

And the scariest thing is.....I only remember them having a C rating once and that was a few years after I left there. While I was there they never had less than a A rating. Obviously, the owner knew ($$$) the inspector(s).

    Homer

    29 Jun 14 at 11:06 pm

  17. @TahoChic - I heard about the 'food in the bathroom' thing on WLTX but didn't watch to hear the details. I'm always sort of wary about fish markets. I've never been to the N. Main Fish Market but St. Andrews Seafood seems to be fine. I see delivery trucks there just about every other day and anything I have bought from them in the past has always been fresh (even though the owners can be a little testy at times). I went to Clifton's on Decker one time and a lot of the frozen food was out of date (and not by a day or a week either). I have not gone back there since.

    Homer

    29 Jun 14 at 11:12 pm

  18. I worked at Quincy's on Rosewood back in the late 80's and the smallest thing can get a point taken away. Such as the oven mitts could NOT be on the counters. If the inspectors came in at rush hour, they would take off for little things that we just didn't have time to clean up yet, like crumbs on (what we called) the sideline. So I know you can't always say a place is filthy because of the ratings on the door.

    Sidney

    30 Jun 14 at 9:53 am

  19. Hey, Sidney, or sometims Teresa didn't have time to clean up the mess customers would leave on the salad/buffet bar. :)

  20. @Mr.BO Id recommend Nicky's Pizzeria in Five Points for a good, legit NY style pizza. Definitely the closest and most authentic pizza that I've had since I ventured down here.

    Peter

    30 Jun 14 at 3:25 pm

  21. @MrBo - The Blythewood House of Pizza is good. I work in Blythewood and eat at BHP often. There is a Restaurant on the side of town where I live called the Pizza Palace, I swear they must be owned by the same people as Blythewood House of Pizza.

I thought The Parthenon that was in Five Points was pretty good.

    Rick

    30 Jun 14 at 5:45 pm

  22. The owners of the Parthenon are now running Zorbas Express Pizza , 7326 Broad River Road in Irmo.

    Mike

    30 Jun 14 at 6:17 pm

  23. I know the Pizza Palace well. (Off Leesburgh Rd.) It's real close to where I live. One of the things I judge pizza by is the dough. I want something akin to fried yeast-bread. Pizza Palace it's a bit more like cake. The sauce was good, but the cheese could have used some more oomph.

To us transient Yankees, Pizza is as much a political argument as BBQ is here.

    MrBO

    30 Jun 14 at 6:32 pm

  24. Actually, what I thought I heard was that Mr. Nabil, who runs the Pizza Palace started out working at the PHOP (as I call it, pronounced 'Pee-Hop'). That might account for the similarity.

    badger

    30 Jun 14 at 6:51 pm

  25. Zorba's Express Pizza in Irmo (that Mike mentioned) has excellent pizza, and I'm finicky about my pizza.

    Cam

    30 Jun 14 at 8:32 pm

  26. @MrBo - I hear you about Pizza being related to BBQ down here. I have said for many years the best pizza I ever had was a New York style pizza in, believe or not, Vermont.

The time I spent up north, New England area, it seemed like every where I ate was good. Even the fast food joint's seemed to be better than down south.
I worked with a guy for many years that was from Massachusetts, He said "I'm not from the south but I got here as soon as I could".

    Rick

    1 Jul 14 at 7:45 am

  27. I don't eat BBQ very often and am the wrong person for knowing if it's mustard, vinegar or ketchup based as I am unable to tell the difference.

I've enjoyed a variety of pizzas in my day and I can enjoy most any type of pizza except for one that is deep dish and with thin crust...I also eat pizza crust first. I have enjoyed my share of Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizzas in the Target at Lexington Pavilion, Shoppes at Woodhill and in a KFC/Pizza Hut Express in Blythewood (and to a lesser extent Lugoff) though...

Oriental food smells unappetizing to me and these type of ratings can't provide much confidence for me to want to think about eating at one. I furthermore feel as if I'm the only one that hasn't warmed up to Miyo's and these ratings aren't helping me much with that, either.

    Andrew

    1 Jul 14 at 3:07 pm

  28. I took my folks out to Miyo's off Two Notch road. My brother said; "One star dining at 4 star prices...."

    Never went back.

    MrBO

    1 Jul 14 at 4:37 pm

  29. @Andrew - I love pizza as well, but eating the crust first? I do not even eat the crust, I like the toppings all the way to the edge. Not long ago Domino's had about an inch of crust on their pizzas. I quit going until they changed recently.
I told them, if I wanted bread, I'd go buy a loaf.

    Rick

    1 Jul 14 at 6:41 pm

  30. Since we are talking about pizza...Pie-Tanza (Polo Rd and Mallet Hill Rd) will be opening back up with new ownership. I am not sure when and I am not sure if he is going to keep the name Pie-Tanza. But I know it will be soon. So watch for that and check them out when it opens back up.

    Sidney

    1 Jul 14 at 9:14 pm

  31. Rick, I like your comment "if I wanted bread, I'd go buy a loaf". This is why I seldom eat a Subway sandwich. Very dough-heavy and light on the meat and cheese.

    Terry

    2 Jul 14 at 1:27 am

  32. @Terry, yeah, Firehouse Subs make the best ones (of the chains) in my opinion, or at the very least I'd go to Quiznos before going to Subway, or Sub-station 2. I tend to like my subs warm.

    MrBO

    2 Jul 14 at 2:35 am

  33. I enjoy Firehouse Sub's meatball subs but they are on the high side so I only enjoy them on an occasional basis because of it. The fact that they have the Coco-Cola Freestyle is another plus for me. Frankly I have been unable to warm up to any of the other sub sandwich places though.

I think I started the pizza crust first MO when Pizza Hut came out with the stuffed crust pizza. I was in 4th grade and our school cafeteria had it for lunch one day. I remember thinking I'd eat it crust first and I also have a recollection in recommending a couple of friends to do the same thing..I remember commercials describing it as "the pizza you eat crust first" in fact. Ever since, I've gotten to where I enjoy pizza crust first better (regardless of where I eat it).

I also feel like the only one unable to warm up to Waffle House and these ratings can't help me much in that regard. I think a big reason is the fact that people still smoke in them the times I've been in them and the smell is almost nauseating for me to be around.

    Andrew

    2 Jul 14 at 2:06 pm

  34. @Andrew - I have never eaten at Firehouse Subs, I have wanted to, but I do not know where any of there restaurants are located except Lexington, and I never put forth the effort to look them up to see if any are in my area. I live off Garners Ferry Road.

As far as eating the crust first, I know my last response to your comment about eating the crust first, it was surprising to me that somebody would. but now I fully understand where you're coming from after you mentioned the stuffed crust pizza from Pizza Hut.
I thought if I ever had one, I too would try the crust first.
So, I retract my comment about not liking crust, due to the fact I have never tried a stuffed crust pizza.
Heck I might like it if it's stuffed, I like cheese toast.

Also, even though I am a smoker, I agree with you totally, I can't stand to eat when others are smoking. It ruins the entire meal. I want to smell the food, which is a big part of tasting the food.
It ticks me off when I'm eating and others smoke.
I also can't stand it when I'm in a restaurant, and someone comes in or walks past wearing a thick oily perfume, yuk! That also pisses me off and, I WILL say something.
Almost gotten into fights before. If you have read any of my comments on this site before, you might envision, I am not someone that would sit quietly by, and let others spoil my meal by smoking, or with an overpowering perfume.
There is a guy where I work, I have heard that he goes to the flea market and mixes his own cologne using the different oils they sell.
If you have ever been to the US #1 Flea Market you may know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, the smell is so thick, 2 or 3 minutes after he walks past, if you get caught in his jet stream, the smell is still there. Now that's just excessive.

    Rick

    2 Jul 14 at 5:13 pm

  35. @All - Sorry I was so tame on that last comment.
    So I'll add this,
What about watermelon? Seeded or seedless?
I'll pay the extra buck or two for a seedless, but dang, they still have seeds.
I cut the watermelon up and put the pieces in a bowl and eat it that way.
And if one does not pick the seeds out, guess what?
The seeds still come out, just in a different bowl.

Wheew, okay now I feel better.

    Rick

    2 Jul 14 at 5:22 pm

  36. I only buy thin crust pizzas so the stuffed crust point is moot to me. Any other type of pizza, I leave the crust on the plate. Another thing I have never figured out about pizza places; after eating all of the bread associated with the pie, then why the heck would I want a side order of bread sticks and cinnamon bread for desert? It makes no sense to me!!

    Homer

    2 Jul 14 at 9:32 pm

  37. Even though I am a smoker, I do not like to be around smoke when I am eating. I've gotten to the point where I don't even like to drink an alcoholic beverage with my meal. It seems to fill me up too quickly.

I do, however, miss being able to smoke a cigarette with a cold beer in an air conditioned or heated bar. Most places I go try to cater to the smokers by offering a covered deck or such. I guess that's why I do most of my drinking in the comfort of my own home. It's a lot safer too!!!

    Homer

    2 Jul 14 at 9:59 pm

  38. What *our* school cafeteria called "pizza pie" circa 1967 put me off it for years. It was a pie crust filled with ground beef with melted cheddar on the top.

Same thing for submarine sandwiches. The Satchel Ford sub was a hotdog bun with a slice of bologna cut in half to fit the vertical shape and a Kraft Single cut in half for the same reason.

For years I thought I knew what pizza and subs were, and knew I didn't want any!

    ted

    2 Jul 14 at 11:33 pm

  39. That was the same 'pizza' that Irmo Elementary served in the 60's too. That must have been the standard. They made up for it with the awesome banana pudding and killer cinnamon buns!!

I do, however, have a recipe somewhere for a cheeseburger pizza that's pretty danged good.

    Homer

    3 Jul 14 at 12:21 am

  40. @Homer - Same for me. I don't care for alcoholic beverages anymore when I eat. The time was when a cold beer went good with just about anything, not now.

Big glass of iced tea, water and sometimes a coke, sprite or mt. dew, even though I try to stay away from the soda pops, I still enjoy one from time to time.

    Rick

    3 Jul 14 at 5:12 am

  41. @Rick - I remember the days when I still had a metabolism where I could go to Pizza Hut and eat a large pizza (sans crust) with a pitcher of beer and not gain an ounce. I never went above 165 pounds until I was in my late 30's. Those were the days....:^)

    Homer

    3 Jul 14 at 11:49 pm

  42. I worked at the Devine Street Pizza Hut in high school in the early '70s and at around 20 minutes before closing we would all start building mega pizzas to take with us. Like Homer says, how I could eat all that and not weigh over 160 I don't know, but now it is an effort to eat three slices and hard enuff to stay below 200#.

    Terry

    6 Jul 14 at 1:48 pm

  43. @Terry - referring back to my old Whale's Tail post(s). I did the same thing. Just before closing time, I would find any leftovers that were not used for the night (that I could attest to being good, especially steaks and lobster) and take a plate home with me. I wonder if any if the restaurants around town allow their employees to take food with them when they get off from work....

    Homer

    7 Jul 14 at 2:06 am

  44. btw I know Rick was asking about Firehouse subs and as a Garners Ferry resident, I'd say the two closest locations are:

    633 Main Street
    3250 Forest Drive (former Blockbuster)

It also appears they have one slated to take over a portion of the former Dreher Plaza Blockbuster at 2301 Augusta Rd. (which hasn't featured here yet)...

    Andrew

  45. Forest Drive is not to far out of the way for me, I live out Garners Ferry just past the SUPER DUPER Wal- Mart.
I need to go to Sam's Club tomorrow anyway, However I am not sure where the Blockbuster was on Forest Drive.
I'm sure if I drive towards Richland Mall far enough I'll see it.

  46. The Forest Drive location is just beyond Richland Mall (towards Providence Hospital). You'd take a left out of Richland Mall and see it at the intersection of Forest Drive and Sunnyside Drive. It's across the street from Lizard's Thicket in fact...

  47. I am familiar with Sunnyside Drive. There was a shoe store at the corner of Sunnyside and Forest Drive that my Mom took us kids to buy shoes. That was way back.
Seems like it was called Jacks Shoe Store.

  48. Rick- That is the Sunnyside Drive that Andrew was talking about. Jack's Shoes was there at least until the late 1980s. My mom used to buy my shoes from there when I was a kid. The "Jack" came from Rhett Jackson, who owned that store and The Happy Bookseller. I think he also may have been the Jackson from Jackson Camera stores.
