South Carolina State Fair 2013, Fairgrounds: 20 October 2013 6 comments
Well, if you've been following Columbia Closings for a while, you won't find any real surprises here. I like what I like (mainly neon in the case of the State Fair) and you'll find a lot of what you found last year here this year again. I did try out the in-camera HDR setting of my LX7 some this year, and I think it works better for this kind of shot than it does for daylight ones where I've never really been happy with it.
I will say that for what should be an important anniversary year (150 years of the State Fair..) the Fair was a little sparse this year. It seemed to me that the artwork was fewer pieces spaced farther apart and the Steel Building (and the one to the right of it which name escapes me) had fewer booths this year, with some stalwarts missing. In particualr, I didn't notice the Hmong craft booth this year, and the Grey Market DVD booth was not there. There was also another surprising no-show which I'll mention tomorrow. And, granted it was Sunday evening, but still I didn't get to ride the bumper cars this year because I would have been the only car in the rink, and what's the fun of that?
Anyway, it was still fun to walk around, eat greasy food and watch the people and rides. Lots after the break!
(And check back in a few days when I finally have the skyride video uploaded..)
Building, 3424 Two Notch Road: 2012(?) 2 comments
When I drove by the other day and saw that It's All Good Grill would be opening soon in this spot on Two Notch near Pine Belt, I tried to remember what had been there before, and found I couldn't do it.
Just googling the street address leads to Jimmy's Transmission Service (as does the big sign by the road :-), but this property tax link suggests that there are two buildings on the lot and I'm guessing that Jimmy's is in the larger one. I'm pretty sure I have seen a number of businesses in here over the years, but none that stand out in my memory...
Video Magic, 5445 Two Notch Road: October 2013 7 comments
I don't think the post title is quite right. At one time, this place was Video Magic & Mags. That incarnation closed for a few weeks, then re-opened, apparently under the same ownership, but with a new name and more emphasis on lingerie than videos or "mags". That new name eludes me now.
Anyway, I noticed earlier this month that that operation has closed or re-flagged, and the place is now a second location for longtime Broad River Road "Couples store" Nancy's Nook (which name it always strikes me lacks a syllable).
Cartridge World, 5343 Sunset Boulevard Suite J: 24 June 2013 6 comments
I mentioned a few days ago that the Forest Drive Cartridge World had moved.
I'm not sure which happened first, but in the same general time frame, the one on Sunset Boulevard in Topspin Plaza closed, although it is still listed on the plaza marquee. (Interestingly, everything on that marquee is a store, except Eggs Benedict..)

Adams Cabinet Works / @The Office / Tatiana / Offices & Self Storage / Tripp's Fine Cleaners, 9003 Two Notch Road: 14 October 2013 4 comments
Well, at least nobody was hurt.
When I heard about this fire, my first thought was It probably started in the Self Storage, and it seems I was right. The self storage (and office) facility was carved out years ago from the old Spring Valley Commons Theater, and I figured there was probably somebody storing something they shouldn't. It seems I was wrong about that second part though: The Fire Department is calling it arson.
The blaze looks to have taken out stores starting with Adams Cabinet Works and working clockwise from there, through @ The Office, Tatiana, the self storage facility and Tripp's Fine Cleaners.
Just from the looks of it, I think they'll have to knock down most of that wing. Given that there are a number of vacancies in the plaza, perhaps some of the stores can re-locate within Spring Valley Commons.
Midland PCS, 3910-C Two Notch Road: 2012 (moved) 2 comments
This little cell-phone storefront is in the Food Lion shopping center at the corner of Two Notch & Pine Belt Roads.
Judging from the Facebook page, they opened in late May of 2012 and closed possibly as early as late June 2012, or at least that's when the updates to the page stopped. At any rate, I don't think they made it into 2013.
There are currently several other vacancies in this plaza, despite Food Lion drawing fairly well.
Update 22 November 2013: It turns out this place has moved. The current address is 3950 West Beltline Blvd, Columbia, SC 29204, phone: 803-363-1353.
Cartridge World, 4711 Forest Drive Suite 14: 2013 (moved) 4 comments
I used this location of Cartridge World a few years ago to refill the toner in my HP Laserjet, and that refurbished cartridge is still going strong. Sometime this year, this branch moved out of the Forest Park plaza next to Cardninal Newman, west down Forest Drive past beltline to a new location more or less across from The Pizza Joint and next to Lizard's Thicked.
It looks like the Forest Park storefront is currently being used for overflow storage.
Imperial Glass, Inc: 7971 North Woodrow Street Suite 6: 2013 1 comment
Here, I believe, is the last posting from the little strip mall on North Woodrow Street near Broad River Road. This Irmo glass showroom is next to the former China Pearl, and is listed in this year's phonebook (Feb 2013), so apparently closed fairly recently.
UPDATE 6 October 2021: Adding "North" to "Woodrow Street" in the title and tags. Adding map icon.
Curves, 6030 Saint Andrews Road Suite G/H: 2011 (moved) 24 comments
Women's gym Curves moved out of this little strip just past Piney Grove Road sometime in 2011, to set up shop down the street at Seven Oaks Shopping Center (6169 Saint Andrews Road). As of last week, I believe this storefront was still empty.
Update 26 January 2014 -- The new location:
Ole Timey Meat Market, 3008 Rosewood Drive: Early October 2013 (moved) 14 comments
Local butcher shop Ole Timey Meat Market has moved their Rosewood Drive location from the former Keg O' Nails building to the former Edens Food Stores / bodyFit / Jaime Scott Fitness building a number of blocks east.
As you can see, there is already ongoing work on the 3008 building, so apparently it will not be vacant long.
