Varsity Billiards, 1128 Devine Street & 1132 Devine Street: August 2010 (open again)   5 comments

Posted at 10:23 pm in closing

I was hitting Moe's at University Corner on Main the other night (in the old Big Bird slot) and parked down on Devine Street, between Main & Assembly.

I couldn't help but notice that Varsity Billiards is closed. The lighted sign has always been a retro treat, and it's a shame to see it dark. (The first two, lighted, pictures are from February 2010).

The phone does not seem to have been disconnected, and the building permit is for "repairs", so perhaps they will be back. I'm not a pool player, but it would be a shame to see Varsity behind the eight-ball.

UPDATE 20 July 2017 -- Well, this is unexpected: The Free Times says Varsity is open again.

  1. Former USC basketball greats John Roche and Bobby Cremins played pool there often.

  2. I loved this place when I was in college (93-97). The owner and the place was so retro I swear I was on a Happy Days set. It was also a place known to be very slack about checking IDs , another reason I was fond of it!

  3. I remember going there a few times when I was in high school and I had to use the phone. It was a Rotary phone and I could not figure out how to use it, lol

  4. The State Paper has posted the obituary for Tony Patrone who passed away at the age of 95. Part of it reads..."In 1964 he established the University Corner at Main and Devine streets, where he opened the well known Varsity Billiards..." It also states that he played football at USC.

  5. Good News. A new restaurant called Madrigal has opened in the bottom right corner of the old Varsity Billiards. It's Italian and is delicious. Very quaint and quiet and seating for maybe 30. Reservation definitely suggested.
