I believe I have only been in a Captain D's once, at a family event, where I ended up getting the corn-on-the-cob side item since I am not a seafood lover.

At one time, Captain D's & Shoney's were under the same ownership, and they tended to locate the two restaurants close to each other. This was the case on Two Notch and Garners Ferry, and was also the case here. In the event the Shoney's pairing with this Captain D's was closed in 2012, razed, and rebuilt as a Cook Out.

This store soldiered on for 13 more years after its partner succumbed, so that is some stick-toit-iveness.

  1. I tried to eat here sometime in late 2025 only to be told that they were out of soft drinks. (Ted's rule #2) I walked out.
On a related note, Captain D's used to offer decent seafood at a good price, but the last time I ate this one, which was few years back, it was neither.

  2. I agree with Tom. They were always a cut above Long John Silvers.

The last time I went there was when they offered their "Lobster" rolls. Not really sure how much lobster there was in those.

  3. Captain D’s is a doomed franchise. I have it for lunch every 6 weeks and I am always the youngest customer in the place and I am in my mid50s.

As for this location, it thrived back in the mid 90s when I worked in the area but began a slow decline after that. In the last 5 years that decline accelerated rapidly. It’s sad seeing a once lunchtime staple close but there was no saving it in this declining area of town.

Note that the Lexington Cap D’s is still close to the old experience but I wager you’ll be the youngest eating there when you go. :-)

  4. I grew up on Captain D's the one in Cayce does pretty well. I think because it's across from Still Hopes Retirement Community.

  5. A friend of my mother was visiting some other friends who lived near a coastal city; I forget where. They went to a few restaurants during her visit: general/American, Italian, Mexican. She wanted to dine at a local seafood restaurant, being near the coast, but they never seemed to think of that.

(I think these people were wealthy or very upper-middle-class, so money was not an issue.)

On her last night with them, they asked if she wanted to eat anywhere in particular. She had a chance to suggest a seafood restaurant.

Apparently, they smiled big and basically said "Great idea! There's a Captain D's right over on [Whatever Street]!" They lived near the coast and this was their idea of "nice local seafood restaurant".

  6. I found out today that the one in Spartanburg has just recently closed, whi8ch suggests that their problems may be with the chain and/or the franchisee and just this location.
