Chapman Dodge, Northwest Corner of Harden Street & Gervais Street: 1970s   1 comment

Posted at 12:51 am in closing

I think there have been a few mentions of Chapman Dodge here over the years, but I have absolutely no memory of it, despite the fact we must have driven past the lot often. Currently all that seems to be left is the faded name painted on the back of the building abuting the lot (which I presume was the repair shop).

While this lot has been vacant for many years, it's not uncommon for temporary truck-based businesses to pull in and set up shop for a weekend.

Comment: Before it was Chapman Dodge it was Burnside Dodge. Burnside Dodge was there until sometime around 1980 to 1983. Dick Burnside owned Burnside Dodge and was the brother of Marion Burnside that owned Marion Burnside Chrysler Plymouth on Garners ferry Road. The empty lot shown here was the used car lot. And Ted is correct, the back of the building was the repair shop. Of course after it was Chapman Dodge, it was the Greyhound bus terminal, or was it Trailways?

Comment: Burnside Dodge used to sponsor a horror movie program on Saturday nights on WLTX.

Comment: @Tom - I do not remember the horror movie program on WLTX. Lived here all my life so I probably saw it, just don't remember it. Do you remember a radio show on WNOK FM that came on around 11:00p Saturday nights back in the late 70's. The name of the show was MQ. They played album rock before just about any other station in the Columbia area did.
It was obvious the host of the show was Macky Quave.
Quave was a TV news host at the time.

Comment: @Rick & Tom - I used to watch the horror movies on Saturday nights when I was a kid. Some were classics while others were just terrible 'B' movies. Either channel 6 or 12 out of Augusta did the same thing. If I would turn the old antenna to the right position I could pick up the Augusta stations clearer than channel 19.

@Rick - I don't remember the Saturday night radio show on WNOK. I'm not sure what station I was listening to at the time. Probably WZLD if they were still AOR at time time. I stumbled across those old Mindblower speakers l told you about earlier. If I think about it I'll post a picture to bring back some memories.

Comment: @Rick - concerning the topic of this post. I thought that this used to be Burnside Dodge back in the day. Didn't you say one time that you lived in one of the old Burnside houses, or am I mistaken. My cousin married into the Burnside family. I think her father-in-law is a cousin to Dick and Marion. His name is Jack and he had a huge farm on Garner's Ferry Rd. though he has sold a bunch of the property off for a NICE chunk of change.

Comment: I didn't notice the lettering for Chapman Dodge showing until this post despite the fact that I've interacted with this intersection countless times over the years...

I know the adjacent Greyhound Bus Station is looking to relocate (but I gathered that such plans were being hindered by NIMBY attitudes) which leads me to believe that should such a move work out, it will leave this property ripe for some type of overhaul...

Comment: @Homer - Yes I do live in the house Dick Burnside built back in 1965. I have talked with Mr. Burnside about the house.
In the mid 60's car sales/Dealerships were doing fairly well for themselves. This is when new, more modern designs and muscle cars were becoming available. Mr. B had the money so he went all out on the house. I think I insulted Mr. Burnside, after he told me the house cost him around one hundred thousand to build back then, and that price did not include the land, I said "That doesn't seem like to much".
I could tell he got a little irritated, raising his voice saying, "Son, that was a lot of money for a house in 1965". I guess it was, thinking about the NEW three bed two bath home my parents bought in 1964 for less than 20 thousand.

Comment: @Ted - What time frame was that and what channel? I don't recall the details you spoke of but it sounds totally funny (as in bad). Sounds like something WOLO would have done in the day (with Dave Aiken).

Comment: Tom, I seem to recall a weekly TV time slot called The Graveyard Shift that ran Saturday nights after the local news in the '70-'71 era. Cheapy B movies that were great to watch and laugh at while satisfying cravings for munchies.
    Different, good times.

Comment: @Rick - think about this. When my folks bought the 1.5 acres and house here in Irmo, in 1948, it was $6000. Now it's going to be my emergency retirement fund because it can only be sold as commercial and the guy that bought a 100x100' lot on one corner of the block payed a very pretty penny for it.

Comment: The horror movie show of the early to late 70s aired on WLTX at 11:30 pm on Saturday night and featured the classic Universal horror films. The host was a mad scientist who spent half his time trying to sell Dodge cars and the other half drinking his experiment which was a "pollution free gasoline."

Comment: @Homer - Concerning your emergency retirement fund, I'm hoping for the same. The house and property we have was previously owned by a man and woman that were both criminal defense attorneys who got their degrees courtesy of affirmative action.
They both got involved with one of their clients in an auto theft ring and were arrested, not surprising, charged and sent to the big house, which ultimately resulted in foreclosure of the property.
The house sat empty for a year and a half while going through the legal process of being returned to the bank for sale. The bank listed the property I own now, for what the previous tenants owed. I paid thirty cents on the dollar what it appraised for, and half of that was money I used from selling my old home reducing the selling price by 50%.
I am aware it may sound like I'm gloating, I'm not, just stating facts, I have worked hard over the years for what I have and am proud the government did not give it to me. Also, my property value has only gone up since 2004.

Comment: In my previous comment, 30 Jan at 4:39pm, I stated I paid thirty cents on the dollar for what my property appraised for.
My calculations were incorrect and I actually paid close to 40 cents on the dollar. Jose Cuervo caused me to make the incorrect calculation and statement. Was not my fault, I blame him.

Comment: @Homer- I get frustrated with TWC as well. Unfortunately my Wife is a TV nut from hell, we have twelve TV's in the house and subscribe to the TWC Digital Tier including all the pay channels, Netflix and Amazon Prime. We also have TWC Phone service and the ultra internet speed package which I believe TWC refers to as Road Runner TurdBo Extreme.
50 Mbps download and 5.0 up. Which I have confirmed by going to TWC promises up to 100 down before long, we'll see.
We are what TWC calls a Signature Home Customer and pay an exorbitant price for the so called privilege of being associated with them.
    About $260/month.
I will say one thing positive about them, when ever I have a problem and call TWC, I get a greeting that says "We have identified you as a Signature Home Customer, we are connecting you with a representative" and within 15 seconds I'm talking to an American in Charlotte NC.

Comment: I wouldn't have a chance to check out MeTV unless it's on DirecTV's network as that's what I have...

I've heard that TWC wins awards for how bad their customer service is and I have recollections of my sister-in-law has gotten frustrated with them on several occasions.

Comment: I'll have to say I get good customer support from TWC, and they are quick to send a technician out when needed, the only problem is, that's about once every other month.
I also like the fact that I am able to block 30 phone numbers from calling me using TWC phone service. I just log on to MyTWC, click on phone service and enter the number I want to block.
I block robo calls, political calls, telemarketers as well as all the women that call me day and night, and pissing my wife off. Call blocking doesn't work to good for that.
The girls just start riding by my house, blowing the horn, waiting for me by the road, leaving notes in my mailbox, knocking on the door, it's a burden I tell you, a burden.

Comment: My solution is I haven't had a home phone in twelve years. I could count the number of telemarketing calls I've gotten on two hands in that time, and they hang up real quick when you tell them they've called a cell phone. I can't for the life of me think of a reason to have a home phone anymore.

Comment: Sometimes I have a little fun with telemarketers. I act nice and like I'm interested. I'll ask for their Company name, I'll ask were they are located and get their e-mail and physical address, a return phone number in case we get disconnected and the persons name I'm talking to. And I tell them I'm asking these questions to make sure they are a legitimate Company. These people are always happy to comply thinking they are about ready to make a sale, Then I turn on them like a rabid dog, I raise my voice and say "For your information I am on the do not call list, the Government fines people like you $5000.00 for each call you make to someone on the do not call list. I'm turning all information collected over to the authorities.
Usually they hang up before I'm finished and, I never hear from them again. Ha Haa great feeling.
