This old school car wash on Harbison actually does have a clear view as it is half way up the hill that descends to Bower Parkway.

I'll admit that I never really noticed it until commenter Homer (and others) mentioned that it was gone. It seems a bit out of place on the current Harbison, where you would expect land to now be too expensive for such uses. Given the owner's retirement message on the sign, I suspect it had been there quite a while.

Personally, I've never seen the attraction of car wash scents. Whenever I forget to say no scent, I end up with watering eyes until I can clear it out again...

UPDATE 14 September 2015 -- As noted by commenter Homer, this place has now been mostly razed:

  1. Never been there, seems like it must have been a nice car wash though. Remove CB and car phone antennas, Hmmm.. don't think I've seen a Car Phone antenna in a while.

And car scents, just what I want, to smell like a Pina Colada when a cop stops me... I can hear him now, "Have you been drinking?" "Step out of the car please"

They might as well make a Tequila scent... "No officer, I just left the car wash" BURP.

  2. This car wash was built in the late 90s as the stretch of Columbiana Station across the street was coming into existence.

I went once or twice to this one with my mom in its early years but we fell out o going to car washes in general. Now when I feel a need to get my car washed, I typically go to a Circle K.

I've never heard of car wash scents but I think they'd be problematic for people with sensitivies to fragrances.

  4. I never went to this car wash - I won't take my truck through a drive through car wash of any kind, I'm too particular- but $60 is a real bargain for a hand wash and compound. LOL @ the piña colada scent, I used to have the Margarita scented one from Bath & Body Works in my truck.

  5. I used this car wash religiously until I bought my last vehicle that they claimed was too low to the ground to go through. Even though it will go through every other car wash in Columbia. They did 'graciously' tell me that they would be happy to do a hand wash and wax.....lol. I always thought that they did a better detailing job than Frank's and at the time they were also cheaper.

  6. And as far as the scents go, they all smell like crap to me. I just spray down the carpets with Febreze or stuff a couple of dryer sheets under each front seat. Works for me.....

  7. I couldn't be happier to see this one close. The owner was a total jerk who had zero customer service skills and they were terrible at their job. Good riddance!

There seems to be something going on here. I noticed a couple of trucks and a commercial dumpster there this afternoon.

Went by today and the car wash is rubble. All that's left is the huge canopy type thing that covered the whole building.

I had read that an eating place was planning to build...a simple web search for 145 Harbison Blvd. yields this The State article indicating that Del Taco is to be the eating place...it is likely the only one in the whole state of South Carolina...

If Del Taco opens up here, more power to them. Getting out of this parcel was always problematic to say the least. And God forbid when a train is crossing Harbison!!

Del Taco out of Atlanta was in Columbia briefly in the late '80s at Columbia Mall. I took the very first customer's order on opening day. That was the first and last job I had at the mall. Ahhh....the good 'ol days.

I am not familiar with Del Taco. I was looking at franchises last night and saw a "Taco Johns" franchise offer that I also have never heard of.
How would one describe Del Taco's food? Similar to Taco Bell?

The only thing I remember are jokes that Johnny Carson used to make on the Tonight Show. Maybe it's the In N Out of tack chains??

There was a Del Taco at the intersection of Broad River and St Andrews roads in the mid 80s until ???

Then it became Steves #1 Sub Contractors.
