Modern Lighting Center, 633 Meeting Street: 30 November 2012 6 comments
It was pouring down rain today when I noticed that Modern Lighting Center on Meeting Street was closed. I have always liked the big carraige light they had by the street (the link shows a nice picture of it). According to their sign, lights out was on 30 November of 2012.
UPDATE 3 December 2014 -- This place is now Columbia Flag & Sign Company, though vestiges of Modern Lighting remain:

Sad to hear this. I only went there one time. I couldn't find anything I liked at the big box stores, so I figured I give these folks a try. They special ordered a unique fixture for me. They were very helpful.

I had an old Nutone intercom system in my house. I was looking to upgrade it to a more modern system, after looking online for retailers in Columbia that sold Nutone, I was directed to Modern Lighting Center. They wanted $1000.00 for the main unit, the part that has the radio, CD player, and is able to listen and talk to all the other rooms in the house, as well as the front door. They also wanted $150.00 for the individual room monitor speakers, which I have eleven. I found the items for half the price from different retailers on line. And they had to order them. Mmmm..... I wonder why they went out of business.

Those intercom systems were big in the late sixties. I never understood them. Just holler.

There must've been a commercial vendor that sold those carriage light signs, because I grew up in Louisville, KY, and a store there had the same thing. I'm guessing these stores weren't a franchise.
