I first became aware of this Greene Street building when it was a River City Cafe<\/i>. River City<\/i> is a brand of the Grand Strand centered Divine Dining Group<\/i>, which runs such well known beach names as The Divine Fish House<\/i>, Ultimate California Pizza<\/i>, Bovine's<\/i>, and a number of others whose names escape me right now. The original River City<\/i> is on Business 17 in Murrells Inlet and has walls plastered with old license plates and graffiti, big sloppy burgers served with paper towels for napkins, fries with malt vinegar and floors carpeted with the hulls of the place's signature salted peanuts.<\/p>\n

At some point in the late 1980s or early 1990s, the Divine Group decided to expand into the Columbia market, and opened two River City Cafes<\/i> in town. One was on Two Notch Road<\/a>, and the other was here, in this building.<\/p>\n

For some reason, neither location lasted long. The location on Two notch went on to become a Yesterday's<\/i> and then finally Micato<\/a>, while this location transitioned into The Salty Nut Cafe<\/i>, which from what I can tell (I never made it there) continued with pretty much the same concept as River City<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, somebody set fire to the place the morning of 6 January 2012. The State<\/i> was all over the story, and you can see immediate post-fire pictures here<\/a>, and a picture of the \"person of interest\" in the fire here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When I went out yesterday (25 January 2012), it did not appear that any actual rehabilitation work had started, but there was a permit on the front window, so it does look like they will be re-building (and I would presume they had insurance).<\/p>\n

Not appropos to The Salty Nut<\/i> at all, but while I was there, I noticed that there is still an old railroad trestle segment in the back lot of the place. I can't quite remember the original configuration of train tracks in the area, but apparently they have been re-routed in the fairly recent past.<\/p>\n
