The town has obviously seen better times; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clio,_South_Carolina\">Wikipedia<\/a> says the current population is 726, but the downtown is still mostly intact if often vacant.<\/p>\n<p>In the early years of the 20th though, it was a bit of a boom-town as the railroad came through, and took advantage of that to put up a Vaudeville theater to host acts travelling from New York to Miami.  It was called an <i>Opera House<\/i> as such things tended to be, because that sounded classier.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scpictureproject.org\/marlboro-county\/edens-opera-house.html\">The SC Picture Project<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheEccentricSouth\/posts\/edens-opera-house-historic-clio-scbeginning-in-the-mid-1970s-through-the-1920s-t\/1123002704762546\/\">The Eccentric South<\/a>, the place survived as a theater into the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>Currently it seems to be mostly empty, with a retail operation in the lower corner that looked not to have been open in a while.
