I was driving down Fernandina Road<\/a> the other day, and saw this blank spot at the corner where the road curves around to meed up with Saint Andrews<\/i> behind IHOP<\/i>. There had clearly been something there, but I wasn't sure what. The sign was rather non-commital (other than taggers don't like it), and I could visualize a sub-development that got caught in the great recession, or a golf course that had gone under. Whatever it was, I must have seen it at the time, but it apparently made zero impression on me.<\/p>\n

A little googling turned up that it was an apartment complex. This<\/a> WACH story reveals that it was badly flooded during the Great Flood of 2015<\/a>, but apparently undamaged units continued in operation after that. This review<\/a> suggests however that everybody was being asked to move out by 31 January 2017, and demolition started in May of 2017<\/a>. It doesn't give a reason, but I'm thinking management decided it wasn't worthwhile to rehabilitate the damaged units, or run the place with just the remaining units. I'm guessing that the area being proven to be flood prone is keeping anyone else from re-developing the property as well.<\/p>\n
