{"id":14897,"date":"2018-10-16T01:15:42","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T05:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/columbiaclosings.com\/wordpress\/?p=14897"},"modified":"2018-10-16T02:50:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T06:50:01","slug":"sears-declares-bankruptcy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/columbiaclosings.com\/wordpress\/?p=14897","title":{"rendered":"Sears Declares Bankruptcy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"..\/pix\/14\/02\/p1120194.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/pix\/14\/02\/p1120194_tn.jpg\" title=\"p1120194_tn.jpg\" alt=\"p1120194_tn.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, in a surprise to noone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sears-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-1539579819?mod=hp_lead_pos6\">Sears has declared bankruptcy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sears Holdings Corp. filed early Monday for bankruptcy protection from creditors, marking the collapse of a company that dominated American retailing for much of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer, which sought chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in White Plains, N.Y., reached a deal with its lenders that will allow the 125-year-old company to keep hundreds of its stores open for now.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal, Sears is expected to close at least 150 stores immediately, according to people familiar with the matter. Currently, the company operates roughly 700 Sears and Kmart stores. It employs about 70,000 people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course <i>Sears<\/i> has basically already exited the Midlands, but there are still a couple of <i>Kmart<\/i> stores hanging on in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it's a far cry from the days of \"As Solid As Sears\", and it didn't really have to happen.  If <i>Walmart<\/i> can do it, and <i>Target<\/i> can do it, that, at the least, proves it's possible.
