Barnette's Wallcoverings was at the north-east tip of Boozer Shopping Center, and closed some time last year. It's been several months since I first noticed it closed, so it wasn't too near the end of the year, but on the other hand they are in the 2013 phonebook, so it can't have been too near to the start of 2012 either.

It seems to me that 2012 saw a lot of turnover in Boozer, and while they did get some new tenants, I think that there are more vacancies than usual.

UPDATE 8 May 2014 -- It's now Sissy's Furniture:

I noticed before the Holidays that health food store Nutrition Warehouse in Boozer Shopping Center has moved from the south side of the plaza to 1621 Broad River road in main strip on the north side. Apparently in their old location, they had two adjacent storefronts, as you can still see the label-scar on the unit to the right of the one with the very visible sign.

Along with the move, they have added a Contract Post Office, so the loss of Broad River Road UPS Store is now more or less made good. Their second location, on Forest Drive by the new Pasta Fresca location also has a CPO, and I've found it convenient several times despite the fact that it's just a stone's throw from the Trenholm Plaza post office. Every time I've walked in with a package, there's been no line whatsoever.

Nik's Shoe Closet, 1581 Broad River Road: Spring 2012   no comments

This ladies' shoe store in Boozer Shopping Center apparently set up shop in July of 2011. I'm not sure exactly when it closed, but the storefront was papered over by the time of this 31 May 2012 shot.

This 24 hour gym was in Boozer Shopping Center on the Bush River Road side just a few slots down from Dunkin' Robbins. This is not too far away from the former Curves gym on Colonial Life Boulevard.

Commenter ED points out that the Bel-Air Barber Shop, a Boozer Shopping Center institution, has closed after 40 years. The old style places certainly seem to be closing faster than new ones are springing up. And of course it's depressing to note as well that if this place was 40 years old -- it is a lot *newer* than the places I started getting my hair cut..

This storefront on the Dunkin' Donut side of Boozer Shopping Center apparently came and went pretty quickly. It is listed in the February 2012 phonebook, but not the February 2011 one.

I like the (improbably long necked) logo.

PC Nails, 1569 Broad River Road #B: 2011   1 comment

This nail salon was in Boozer Shopping Center right next to the new location for Hook 'n Needle.

I'm not sure what "PC" stood for in this context as presumably their work was Mac compatible as well..

Hook 'n Needle, 28 Diamond Lane: 2011 (Moved)   14 comments

Posted at 10:59 pm in closing

Sewing & crochet shop Hook 'n Needle was a long-time retail stalwart at Intersection Center. In fact, I'm pretty sure they were the last shop there to either go under or move. Happily, the latter applies here, and at some point this year, Hook 'n Needle moved to the North-West corner of Boozer Shopping Center.

The first three pictures of the old location are from 29 August 2008, the fourth is from 4 September 2010 and the last three are from 24 September 2011.

The church rebuilding Intersection Center continues to make good progress, and hopefully I'll have some pictures of the repurposed Service Merchandise and the new fountain up soon.

Tall Finery, 1621 Broad River Road (Boozer Shopping Center): 2009   3 comments

Tall Finery was a clothing store, presumably for tall women, in Boozer Shopping center, on the same side of the plaza a The Book Dispensary, Dems House of Diamonds and Ron Graham Allergy & Air Quality. Come to think of it, that side (the north one) has been hit pretty hard in recent years.

If all went as planned, the space should be a contract Post Office by now, which makes sense as I can't think of a Fed-Ex or UPS Store in the general area.

Dems House of Diamonds, 1601-B Broad River Road (Boozer Shopping Center): 2004 (moved)   no comments

Dems House of Diamonds goes back to 1969, and I recall hearing the radio commercials constantly on WIS probably as early as the early 1970s. Of course there is no spelling on the radio, so I always got a kick out of them because, well, Diamonds are sparkly, not dim!. And then there was that whole mental image of a house made out of diamonds.. I guess it helps to be 11 to find all that funny.

I'm kind of surprised to notice that the store was right next to the old Book Dispensary as I went to that store constantly, and have no memory of Dems being there. I guess my eyes kind of slid right over anything jewelry related.

In 2004, Dems moved to 1068 Lake Murray Boulevard, where they are still open as Dems Fine Jewelers.

UPDATE 30 September 2011 -- Commenter Andrew sends this picture of the new Dems location on Lake Murray Boulevard:
