In reference to Monterrey's closing I can say only ask one question. Is it me or is there already a glut of Mexican and Chinese restaurants in the Columbia area already? We need some more ethnically diverse restaurants in Columbia. More German, Moroccan, South American, Caribbean, etc. Any of these would be welcome, IMHO as always!!

There's an El Chico page here, but aside from seeing a dumpster out back one day, I have seen no activity there, though the sign message seems like they are at least keeping the place in mind.

The SC Book Festival which was held this past weekend is in trouble. Attendance was down as so too was the number of vendors. There was a lot of complaining that the event charged too much for space, had a lousy date (it competed with Ft. Jackson's Armed Forces Day) and aside from Pat Conroy, who was there in 2012, no "big name" writers." They claim that it will be held in 2014, but with its director stepping down, many there Sunday are afraid it may be the last one.

I haven't seen it mentioned here, but the Monterrey Mexican Restaurant in the Harbison Area has closed. I think it's address is 114 Afton Court. I went there to get take-out tonight, and oddly enough, ran into the (former) manager outside. I think he was there checking the alarm... He said something about the bank and the rent, so I assume the building is in foreclosure. This one is particularly sad for me, because I was once a 2-3 times per week regular at the Broad River location, and then this one. In recent years we'd cut back to once a week or so... and then it was just me going for takeout from time to time after an insect issue scared my wife away. However, the management had changed in recent months and the place seemed to be recovering. I guess the turnaround was too little too late. I will try to go back and take pictures in the next day or two. I'm pretty sure this leaves the Vista location on Senate St. as the sole survivor of this Monterrey's group.
