Please beware of the owner of Bobby's Barber shop has passed away recently. (owner: Robert (Bobby) McBee.
He died on May 2, 2013 and was buried today on May 5, 2013. (See the Statecom.) under the Obti Section.
He was from Hemmingway SC.

Yes, I recall the book store. It was a tiny place, but I bought many "Tom Swift, Jr." books there, and the last 50-cent paperback I ever saw. I think it was called "Chapter 5" or something like that. I had totally forgotten the cleaners until you mentioned them, but now I can recall going there several times when our washer was broke. We have been talking about the Edisto Dairy store here.

It was Tempels Barber Shop,I think the mans' name was "Frenchy" he moved to Covenant Road near Trehholm Park and is now gone. Joanna

There was a hardware store in the middle (Ruff's? The original Richland Mall had a Ruff's Hardware and I think it moved out to this building in the mall's parking lot.) the barber shop on the west end, and a Baskin Robbins on the east end.

I thought the building across from Zestos was a hardware store. Well I know it was a hardware store, I thought it occupied the whole building.

Not as such -- the barbershop at Forest Lake was mine, but I do remember the building. That was the original location of Ambassador Animal Hospital (now accross from The Golden Corral) where our dog, for the first and only time (I think), snapped at and caught a fly out of the air, and where the crusty Vet remonstrated with us kids for laughing at her falling over wooziness after getting anesthesia and having her teeth cleaned.

Anyone out there remember The Sportsman barber shop on Forest Drive? It was across the street from Zesto's. That building has been heavily remodeled but The Sportsman was right on the end, where Wild Birds Unlimited is now.

The Sportsman was a big (4 or 5 chairs) busy place, and sort of a male hangout. Old guys would sit around and yak long after the barber was done with them. The tv was always on, there were racy (for the time) magazines, and of course all the sounds and smells of a good old fashioned barber shop. My dad would take me there then we'd go across the street and get a milkshake.
